Driving in Campania
Campania packs more difficult driving into a small area than anywhere else in Italy. Twenty-one towns restrict their centres, and the region contains Naples, the Amalfi Coast, the Sorrentine peninsula, the islands, the Phlegraean Fields and the Cilento — each presenting the same problem in a different form.

The list below covers the rest: the Amalfi Coast towns of Atrani and Maiori, the Ischia towns of Forio and Lacco Ameno, Caserta with its gate-by-gate schedule, and a spread of towns inland and down the Cilento coast from Cava de’ Tirreni and Nocera Inferiore to Agropoli, Castellabate and Paestum.
The Amalfi Coast is one road
The SS163 Amalfitana runs from Vietri sul Mare round towards Positano and Sorrento, and for most of its length it is a single lane each way cut into a cliff, with blind bends, buses that need the full width to turn, and almost nowhere to stop. Every town hangs off that road, and the historic centres — Amalfi, Atrani, Maiori, Ravello above them — are restricted, tiny, or in Atrani’s case both.
In summer the coast road itself also runs alternating number-plate restrictions on some days, which is separate from any ZTL and applies to the through route. The advice that everyone who has driven it gives is the same: take the ferry or the SITA bus and leave the car in Salerno or Sorrento. If you do drive, book parking in advance in the town you are staying in — arriving and looking is not a plan that works here.
Naples is several zones with different hours
Naples does not have a ZTL; it has a set of them, covering different parts of the centre and not sharing a schedule. The Centro Storico, the Chiaia area and the zones around Tarsia and Marechiaro all operate separately from one another. Add traffic with a reputation it has earned, and a city stay is considerably easier without a car than with one.
If you are arriving by car and staying centrally, the answer is a garage — ask the hotel which one and whether they can register your plate for the approach. If you are only passing through on the way to the coast or the ferries, the tangenziale, the elevated ring road, keeps you out of the centre altogether.
Getting a car onto the islands, and whether to
Ischia, Procida and Capri are reached by ferry from Naples, Pozzuoli or Sorrento, and taking a car across is either restricted or a bad idea depending on the island. Capri does not admit visitors’ cars at all. Ischia limits how many can be brought over in high season, and its towns — Forio, Lacco Ameno and Ischia itself — restrict their centres on top of that.
For a few days on any of them, arriving on foot and using the local buses, taxis or boats will be faster and cheaper than the ferry fare for a car you then cannot park. Leave it in a garage on the mainland.
