Driving in Calabria
Calabria is the toe of Italy: some 800 kilometres of coastline wrapped around three mountain massifs — Pollino in the north, the Sila plateau in the middle and Aspromonte in the south. Almost every town of any age sits either on the shore or on a ridge above it, and the pattern is so consistent that many places exist twice, as an old hill town and a modern marina below it sharing the same name.
Four towns restrict their centres: Tropea, Cosenza, Reggio Calabria and Cariati. Reggio and Cosenza are cities, with the ordinary problems of a city centre. Cariati is a small walled town on the Ionian coast. Tropea is the one that matters most to visitors, and the one where a wrong turn is most likely.
Tropea in high season
Tropea’s old town stands on a sandstone bluff directly above its beach, with the Santa Maria dell’Isola monastery on a rock offshore. The centre is a compact grid of lanes ending at viewpoints over the sea, and it is not somewhere to arrive by car in July or August, when the town’s population multiplies and the approach roads and car parks fill by mid-morning.
Park on the approach or in the lower town and walk up. The climb is short, and the alternative is circling a restricted centre with nowhere to stop and a camera at each way in.
Driving the length of Calabria
The A2 Autostrada del Mediterraneo runs from Salerno down to Reggio Calabria and, unusually for an Italian motorway, carries no tolls along its length. It is also the only fast road in the region, and it stays inland: reaching most of the coast means dropping down to the old SS18 or a provincial road, which in summer can be slow going.
Villa San Giovanni, near the southern end, is where the ferries cross to Messina in Sicily — a crossing of about twenty minutes, with services running through the night.
