Driving in Liguria

Liguria is a thin arc of coast between the mountains and the sea, some three hundred kilometres long and rarely more than thirty deep. There is very little flat ground, and what there is was built on centuries ago. The A10 and A12 motorways cross the region almost entirely on viaducts and through tunnels because there is nowhere else to put them, and the old coast road, the SS1 Aurelia, threads through the middle of every town on the way.

Twenty towns restrict their centres. Genoa runs a round-the-clock zone over its old town, and the rest are Riviera resorts and fishing villages — Camogli, Portovenere, Lerici, Sestri Levante, Levanto, Vernazza, Finale Ligure, Alassio, Ventimiglia and others — most of them small, most squeezed between the hillside and the water.

The Cinque Terre are not a driving destination

Vernazza, Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia and Monterosso sit along a stretch of cliff with barely any road access worth the name. The approaches are narrow switchbacks from above, parking in the villages is minimal and often reserved for residents, and Vernazza restricts its centre outright.

The whole area is built around the train instead. The line runs in tunnel behind the villages with a station in each, services are frequent, and the hop between them takes a few minutes. Base yourself in La Spezia or Levanto, leave the car there for the duration, and take the train in. This is not a compromise — it is genuinely the quickest way to move along the coast.

Genoa is built vertically

Genoa’s old town is one of the largest medieval centres in Europe: a dense maze of caruggi, alleys often too narrow for a car and sometimes too narrow for two people to pass comfortably, climbing the slope behind the port. The restricted zone over it runs around the clock.

The city solved its own geography long ago with public lifts and funiculars linking the harbour level to the districts above. Park near the port or the stations and use them. Attempting the caruggi by car is not a mistake many people make twice.

The Riviera runs on the season

The resort towns work to a summer rhythm. Alassio, Finale Ligure, Spotorno, Pietra Ligure, Sestri Levante and Camogli restrict their seafronts and old quarters, and the restrictions bite hardest on July and August evenings when the front fills up for the passeggiata. Hours are frequently seasonal and frequently not published anywhere you can check from abroad.

Portovenere and Lerici, on the gulf below La Spezia, deserve particular care. Each is reached by a single coastal road that ends in the town itself, so there is no through route — and no accidental way back out once you have committed to it.
