Driving in Friuli-Venezia Giulia
Friuli-Venezia Giulia is Italy’s north-eastern corner, meeting Austria at the Alps and Slovenia along the Karst plateau behind Trieste. It is genuinely multilingual — Italian, Friulian and Slovene are all spoken here, with German in the northern valleys — and it has been a border and a battlefield often enough that the landscape is full of the evidence.
Three towns on this map restrict their centres: Udine, the historic capital of Friuli; Monfalcone, a shipbuilding town on the Gulf of Trieste; and Grado, a resort on its own lagoon island. Udine’s is the zone most visitors meet.
Udine, Grado and Monfalcone
Udine’s centre is Venetian in appearance — Piazza Libertà is often called the finest fifteenth-century square on the Italian mainland — and it is small, walkable and ringed by parking, so the zone is easy to stay outside of. Grado is a different proposition: an island reached by a causeway across the lagoon from the Roman site at Aquileia, with an old town of narrow calli that is closed to traffic where it counts and busy right through the summer. Monfalcone is a working town rather than a destination, dominated by its shipyards, with a modest centre-city zone.
Between Udine and the coast, Palmanova is worth a detour: a Venetian fortress town laid out as a nine-pointed star, its ring road still tracing the ramparts.
Crossing the border
Slovenia and Austria are both minutes away and there are no border checks, which makes it easy to forget that their motorways work differently from Italy’s. Italy charges by distance at toll booths; Slovenia and Austria both require a vignette bought in advance, and driving onto their motorways without one means a fine.
If you are based in Udine or Trieste and thinking of a day out in Ljubljana or across to Carinthia, buy the vignette before you set off rather than at the first services over the line.
