Driving in Molise
Molise is Italy’s second-smallest region and its least visited, to the point that Molise non esiste — Molise doesn’t exist — is a running national joke. It was part of Abruzzo until 1963 and has stayed rural: mountains and high pasture inland, a short stretch of Adriatic coast, and villages that have been emptying for a century. There is very little public transport, so a car is not really optional here.
Two towns restrict their centres: Isernia, an inland town of Samnite origin in the south-west, and Termoli, the port on the coast. Termoli is the one visitors are most likely to reach.
Termoli’s borgo
Termoli’s old town is a walled promontory jutting into the Adriatic, cut off from the modern town by its ramparts and entered through a gate. Inside is a few hundred metres of low houses and lanes ending at the cathedral and the Swabian castle above the sea. It is not a place to take a car — the streets are barely wide enough — and the practical approach is to park in the newer town below and walk up through the gate.
Termoli is also the mainland port for the Tremiti Islands, so in summer the seafront carries ferry traffic as well as beach traffic, and the streets around the harbour are at their worst in the middle of the day.
Inland Molise
Away from the coast the region is slow going. The A14 runs along the Adriatic past Termoli, but there is no motorway inland: the SS17 and SS87 wind through the hills to Campobasso, Isernia and the mountain villages, and journey times run long.
What that buys you is a landscape almost nowhere else in Italy still has. The tratturi — broad grass droving roads used for centuries to move sheep between Abruzzo and Puglia — still cross the region, the Roman town of Altilia at Sepino sits open in a field with a road running through it, and Agnone in the north has been casting church bells since the Middle Ages.
