Driving in Veneto

Veneto covers three quite different kinds of place: the plain cities strung along the A4 between Verona and Venice, the eastern shore of Lake Garda, and the walled towns of the Trevigiano and the Euganean hills. Twenty-two towns restrict their centres.

Among the rest, Treviso runs a round-the-clock zone with some streets restricted only at night, Conegliano allows a short stop with a parking disc, and Rovigo restricts overnight on weekdays with a far longer window across the weekend. The Garda towns of Bardolino, Lazise and Torri del Benaco restrict their lakefront centres on hours that move with the season.

Venice: the road ends at Piazzale Roma

Venice itself has no roads, so there is no zone there to enter by mistake — but there is a hard stop. The Ponte della Libertà carries the road across the lagoon and ends at Piazzale Roma and the Tronchetto, and that is as far as any car goes. Everything beyond is on foot or on water.

The zone that actually matters for a Venice trip is in Mestre, on the mainland, where a great many visitors park or stay because it is very much cheaper — and Mestre restricts its own centre. Use one of the multi-storeys there, or pay for Piazzale Roma if you would rather, and take the train or tram across; it is about ten minutes either way.

The eastern shore of Lake Garda

The Veronese shore — Bardolino, Lazise, Torri del Benaco and on towards Peschiera — is a summer destination with the traffic to match. The old centres sit directly on the water, the lakefront road runs through all of them, and the restrictions tighten in season and in the evenings.

Torri del Benaco is the tightest of them: a small walled core around the castle and the harbour, with the approach road passing straight by the gate. Park before you reach the centre rather than after, because there is nowhere to turn round once you are in the old streets.

The walled towns inland

Away from the lake and the motorway, Veneto has a set of walled towns that reward exactly the same treatment. Montagnana has one of the most complete circuits of walls and towers in Italy. Soave sits beneath its castle among the vineyards. Marostica has its chessboard square, Asolo its hill, and Bassano del Grappa the covered wooden bridge over the Brenta.

All are compact, all restrict the centre, and all are best entered on foot through a gate from a car park outside. In towns this size the walk from the nearest parking to the main square is rarely more than five minutes.
