ZTL Torri Del Benaco
Torri del Benaco is one of the few places on Lake Garda you can reach by car ferry, and the crossing from Toscolano-Maderno on the western shore puts you ashore a few hundred metres from a restricted medieval core. The old town is small — a harbour, a castle above it and the lanes in between — and the lakeside road runs along the edge of it, so the gate arrives sooner than most drivers expect.

The castle and the harbour are the centre
The restricted part of Torri del Benaco is the historic core around the Scaligero castle and the little harbour below it. The castle is the landmark you steer by: a square fourteenth-century keep with crenellated towers, sitting directly on the water at the southern end of the old town, with a walled lemon house built against its flank. Once you are past it you are in streets that were never meant for cars.
The Gardesana Orientale, the road that runs the length of the eastern shore, passes along the edge of the centre rather than through it. That is the saving grace here — the through route does not oblige you to enter the zone, and the turnings that lead down into the old town are short and obvious once you know to avoid them.
Restricted around the clock
The old town is restricted around the clock, every day, behind five camera gates — three long-standing, with two added at viale Marconi behind the castle and in vicolo Fosse. Residents and businesses hold entry windows of their own, and those published times are sometimes mistaken for general openings; they are not. Lake Garda towns commonly run seasonal restrictions that tighten sharply between spring and September, and several of them add evening windows when the lakefront fills up — but which of those applies here is not something we can state.
Read the sign at the gate, and until it tells you otherwise treat the old town as closed to you. The walk from the lakefront parking to anywhere inside it is a few minutes, so the cost of assuming the stricter version is close to nothing.
Where to leave the car
Paid parking runs along the lakefront on either side of the centre and on the approaches above it, and in high summer it fills from the middle of the morning. The lots further from the harbour empty more slowly and cost less, and the extra walk is measured in minutes.
Arriving by boat changes the calculation entirely. If you are staying on the western shore, leaving the car there and crossing as a foot passenger removes the question of where to park in Torri altogether, and the ferry lands you inside walking distance of everything worth seeing.
The ferry, and what it is actually for
The Toscolano-Maderno crossing is one of the few car ferries on Garda, and it exists because driving round the lake is slow: the shore roads are narrow, heavily used and interrupted by tunnels, and the trip from one side to the other by road can take well over an hour for a distance the boat covers in about half that.
That makes it a genuine shortcut rather than an excursion, and it is worth knowing about when planning a route rather than discovering it afterwards. Check the timetable before relying on it — sailings are far more frequent in summer than in winter, and the service is reduced out of season.
