Driving in Apulia
Puglia’s old towns are small, white and nearly all closed to traffic, and the region does it in two ways. Many centres shut around the clock and admit only permit holders; others open during the day and close in the evening, when the old town fills up. Forty-two towns on the map restrict their centres.
Four have their own page, checked against the Comune’s own rules — Bari, Lecce, Ostuni and Polignano a Mare — and the Puglia road-trip guide adds Otranto and the towns in between.
Closed all day, scooters included
Bari Vecchia, the old town, is for permit holders only, twenty-four hours a day. Polignano a Mare’s centre is closed to all vehicles, scooters included. Ostuni is restricted around the clock, and its gates admit permit holders only in set windows through the day. Monopoli and Brindisi are recorded as closed around the clock as well.
In towns like these there is no quiet hour to wait for. Park outside the old town and walk in; in most of them the walk from the nearest car park is short.
Lecce, and the towns that close in the evening
Lecce is the one to read before you go. In August 2025 it reversed its rules: on weekdays the gates are now off only from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 16:30 to 20:00, the zone is closed all day on Sundays and holidays, and the Porta Napoli gate is live around the clock. Much of what is still published online describes the old regime.
Elsewhere the restriction tends to follow the evening. Foggia is recorded as closed on weekday nights and all day on Sundays and holidays; Barletta from 22:30 to 03:00; Trani keeps its core closed from late morning until the following morning, with extra seaside restrictions on summer evenings. Taranto’s island old town is restricted from 07:00 to 22:00, and its pedestrian cores around the clock.
Summer-only zones in the Salento
Some zones exist only in season. Otranto reactivates its ZTL each summer by ordinance — in 2026 from 15 June to 15 September — and Gallipoli’s island old town is restricted through the summer on hours that change from year to year. Check the current year’s ordinance rather than relying on last summer’s times.
Towns we have not yet checked
The trulli country around Martina Franca, the Gargano coast at Vieste, and inland towns such as Altamura and Conversano are on the map with a restricted centre, but without a timetable we can stand behind yet. They are listed below. Alberobello is not on the map at all: its boundary is not published as data we can use, and we would rather leave a town off than guess at its outline.

Each of these towns has a camera-enforced zone shown on the map, but we do not yet hold a timetable we can stand behind. Treat the centre as closed until the sign at the gate says otherwise, and park outside it.
