ZTL Ostuni
You see Ostuni long before you reach it. The old town is a cone of whitewashed houses stacked on a hill above the olive groves, visible from several kilometres away across the plain, and it is the whiteness that gives the place its name — la Città Bianca. What that view does not convey is that the white part is a maze of stepped lanes, and that it is restricted around the clock.

The white town is the zone
The restricted area is the historic centre on the hilltop, the part around the cathedral, and it is closed around the clock. What the gates have are admission windows for authorised vehicles — Via Francesco Cavallo and Via Francesco Vitale at 07:00–10:00 and 14:00–17:00, Via Montegrappa at 08:00–13:00 and 16:00–19:00 — and those are not general openings. There is no open period to aim for, and any entry depends on having a reason the gate recognises.
The old town is built as concentric rings of lanes winding up to the cathedral at the summit, many of them stepped and most of them narrower than a car. Even where driving is physically possible it is a poor idea, and the restriction removes the question.
Where to leave the car
Parking is in the newer town below the old centre and on the ring road that circles the hill. From there the walk up is a climb — this is a hilltop town and there is no avoiding the gradient — but it is a short one, and it is the way everybody arrives.
In July and August, and on summer evenings in particular, the lower town fills up as people come inland from the coast for dinner. Arriving early or parking further out and walking is markedly less frustrating than looking for something close.
Staying inside the old town
A great many of the places to stay in Ostuni are inside the white centre, in converted houses on lanes a car cannot use. Properties there can normally register your plate to let you drive in far enough to unload, but the last stretch is often on foot regardless of permissions.
Ask specifically how close you can get and where you should leave the car afterwards. The answer is frequently not the same as the address, and arriving with heavy luggage and no plan is the common mistake here.
The cathedral, and what lies below
At the top of the town the cathedral presents a late-Gothic front with an enormous rose window, unusual in Puglia and worth the climb on its own. From the terraces around it the view runs out over the olive groves to the Adriatic a few kilometres away.
Those groves are the other thing to know about Ostuni: some of the trees are extremely old and the landscape below the town is protected because of them. The beaches on the coast below are the reason many people are in the area at all, which is why the town fills in the evening rather than at midday.
