Amalfi ZTL map, hours and where to park
You drive the coast road for an hour to reach Amalfi, and the one street you came for, the line from the harbour square up past the cathedral, is closed to you twice over. It is a permit-only zone all year, and from April to October a seasonal pedestrian island empties it of nearly all traffic during four short windows in the middle of the day. The practical answer is to park at the water and walk up.

ZTL Amalfi
Permit categories only, all year; shopkeepers’ own vehicles may load 07:00–09:00 and 14:00–15:00. Pedestrian island 1 Apr–31 Oct 2026: vehicles barred 11:10–11:50, 12:10–12:50, 14:10–14:50, 15:10–15:50 — confirm on the signs
The old street running up from the harbour: via Mansone I, Piazza Duomo, via Lorenzo d’Amalfi, Piazza Spirito Santo, via Casamare and via delle Cartiere. Under the Comune’s traffic regulation (Giunta 149 of 23 November 2022, amended April 2023) only residents, doctors, disabled-badge holders and a short list of categories may enter. Hotels that have their own garage register their guests’ plates with Amalfi Mobilità; other visitors park at the edge of town. On top of the ZTL, the Comune’s 2026 ordinance sets a seasonal pedestrian island (via Mansone I, Piazza Duomo, via Lorenzo d’Amalfi, via Pietro Capuano, Largo Spirito Santo) from 1 April to 31 October, in which all vehicles except a short list (emergency services, disabled-permit vehicles, taxis, public buses, hotel guests on first entry) are barred in four short windows: 11:10–11:50, 12:10–12:50, 14:10–14:50 and 15:10–15:50. All permits were reissued from 1 January 2026 with a new plate-reading camera at Piazza Duomo. The outline is a corridor we drew along the named streets, not an official boundary.
Two layers on one street
The ZTL is defined by the Comune’s Regolamento della viabilità nel centro storico (Giunta 149 of 23 November 2022, amended April 2023). It covers via Mansone I, Piazza Duomo, via Lorenzo d’Amalfi, via Pietro Capuano, Piazza Spirito Santo, via Cardinale Marino del Giudice, via Casamare, via delle Cartiere and Largo ex Saponiera. There is no hour when it opens to everyone: access is by permit category.
Residents and businesses in the old town hold a green permit; doctors authorised by Amalfi Mobilità and disabled-badge holders may enter; and vehicles bound for a hotel in the zone that has its own garage may come in, provided the hotel has given the plate to Amalfi Mobilità in advance. Shopkeepers may load with their own vehicles only between 07:00 and 09:00 and between 14:00 and 15:00. Our outline is a corridor drawn along these named streets, not an official boundary.
The summer island, and the new camera
On top of the ZTL, the Comune’s 2026 ordinance sets up an isola pedonale between via Mansone I, Piazza Duomo, via Lorenzo d’Amalfi, via Pietro Capuano and Largo Spirito Santo. From 1 April to 31 October all vehicle circulation there is barred in four windows: 11:10–11:50, 12:10–12:50, 14:10–14:50 and 15:10–15:50. The exemptions are a short list, including emergency services, disabled-permit vehicles, taxis, public buses and hotel guests on their first entry to the property. Processions on feast days, among them St Andrew in June and November, carry their own closures.
The system changed for 2026. The Comune revoked every green, red and white permit by 31 December 2025, asked holders to reapply online, and put a new plate-reading system at the entrance to Piazza Duomo, with a trial period from 1 to 15 January 2026. Advice written before that date, including some hotel pages, may describe the old arrangements.
Where visitors actually leave the car
The regulation lists the paid public car parks: Luna Rossa, Flavio Gioia I and II, Darsena, Piazzale dei Protontini and the outer berm of the breakwater. Luna Rossa and the berm offer a daily rate. None of them is inside the old street, and from each you walk to the cathedral steps. Temporary access authorisations exist, but they are requested online the day before and last 90 minutes, so they are not a fix for arriving unannounced.
Coming along the coast, remember that the SS163 has its own alternate-plate days on top of all this, 10:00 to 18:00 under ANAS ordinance 340/2019. For 2026 the calendar runs to the end of October on weekends and holidays; our Naples and Amalfi Coast guide explains how the rule works and why many visitors take the ferry from Salerno or Sorrento instead.
Neighbours, and what the street is for
Atrani is a few minutes’ walk east and has two gates of its own, one of them active around the clock. Positano is further west and runs a permit-only strip along its main road, which hotels normally arrange through the Comune’s portal; we hold its hours only from reporting, so check them before relying on them.
At the top of the ZTL is the cathedral of Sant’Andrea, reached by a wide flight of steps, with the Cloister of Paradise beside it. Via delle Cartiere, at the far end of the zone, follows the valley where Amalfi’s paper mills once stood, and a paper museum is still there. Neither is a place for a car, and the town is easiest done on foot from the harbour.
