Sorrento ZTL map, hours and where to park
On an ordinary day Sorrento does not close its centre in the morning, when you would expect it to, but at half past seven in the evening, when everyone drives into town for dinner. From April to October the camera gates around Piazza Tasso go live at 19:30 and stay live until four the next morning. A car that was welcome in Corso Italia at lunchtime is a fine in the making by the time the restaurants fill.

Evenings and nights, 19:30–04:00 daily, plus 10:00–13:00 on public holidays (2026 season, 1 Apr–25 Oct; in past years also a winter run 7 Dec–6 Jan on public holidays and the days before them) — confirm on the signs
The old centre around Piazza Tasso: viale Caruso, via Correale, corso Italia, via Luigi De Maio, via San Francesco, via Vittorio Veneto, Piazza della Vittoria and via Marina Grande. Four camera gates (via Fuorimura at viale Caruso, corso Italia at the Carmine church, via Correale by the Lauro car park, via San Francesco at via De Maio). Entry is for annual and temporary permit holders. The 2026 season runs 1 April to 25 October (Comune notice as reported by Metropolisweb, 30 March 2026); the closing time was 06:00 in the 2023 trial and is 04:00 now. In past years a shorter winter run (7 December to 6 January) applied on public holidays and the days before them; we have seen no 2026–27 notice for it yet. The outline is our own approximation from the streets the Comune names, not an official boundary.
Four gates around Piazza Tasso
The zone is the Comune’s ZTL Centro, set out in Ordinanza 230 of 16 June 2023. It takes in Piazza Tasso and the streets that lead off it: viale Caruso, via Correale, corso Italia, via Luigi De Maio, Piazza Sant’Antonino, via San Francesco, via Vittorio Veneto, Piazza della Vittoria and, down at the water, via Marina Grande.
Cameras watch four entrances: via Fuorimura, where viale Caruso begins; corso Italia, at the church of the Carmine; via Correale, beside the municipal Lauro car park; and via San Francesco, at the junction with via De Maio. They are electronic and fine automatically, so there is no officer to wave you back. Our outline on the map is drawn from the streets the Comune names, not from a published boundary.
An evening zone, with a seasonal calendar
The Comune’s notice for 2026 puts the zone in force from 1 April to 25 October, 19:30 to 04:00, every day. On public holidays it is also closed from 10:00 to 13:00; that morning window applies to holidays only, not to the days before them. In past years a shorter winter run followed, from 7 December to 6 January, on public holidays and the days before them; we have seen no notice for 2026–27 yet, so treat that as earlier-years practice. Outside the season the gates are not normally enforced, which is why a Sorrento street can look open in March and be a camera trap in April.
Two cautions. The closing hour was 06:00 during the 2023 trial and was moved to 04:00 when the Comune revised the scheme that June, so older write-ups still quote the wrong figure. And the 2026 dates reach us through press reports of the Comune’s notice (Metropolisweb, 30 March 2026) rather than the Comune’s own site, so treat the calendar as indicative and check the signs at the gate.
Who is allowed in
Entry is for permit holders. The Comune issues annual permits to residents, to people who work inside the zone and to the other categories in its regulation, and temporary ones for a documented, specific need. Residents’ permits are tied to particular gates, so even a permit holder may be limited to the one or two entrances nearest their street.
For a visitor, that means a hotel inside the zone is a conversation to have before you book, not on arrival. Ask whether the property can register your plate and through which gate you should come in. We have not found a published scheme that gives every hotel guest a right of entry, so do not assume one.
Leave the car at the edge
Sorrento is reached by the SS145 from the Sorrentine peninsula and the Naples side, and the town is compact enough that a car adds little once you are there. The Lauro car park sits by the via Correale gate and via Correale runs from it up toward Piazza Tasso; the Circumvesuviana station and the ferry port are a short walk or bus ride from the centre. Work out which side of a gate your route puts you on before you turn in, because the first camera is usually the point of no return.
Sorrento is also the usual base for the rest of the coast. Hydrofoils and ferries leave for Capri, Naples and the Amalfi Coast, and in summer the road east has its own alternate-plate days; the Naples and Amalfi Coast guide covers those. If your plan is the coast, a day on the water from Sorrento saves a good deal of hairpin driving.
Making a trip of it? Naples and the Amalfi Coast: ZTLs, plate days and where the car stops covers Naples’ eight overlapping zones, Salerno, Ravello and the plate rule on the coast road.
