Is my hotel inside a ZTL?
Type the hotel’s name or address and see whether it sits inside a limited traffic zone, which one, and how close the nearest boundary is — before you book or before you drive.
Include the town for the best match. You can also tap the map to check any spot.
Address search © OpenStreetMap contributors, via Nominatim. What you type is sent to that service to find it.
Why check the hotel, not just the town
Most ZTL fines that visitors talk about start at the hotel. The booking site says “central”, the sat-nav takes the shortest road to the door, and the door is two streets inside a camera gate. Whether you can drive to your hotel at all — and whether the hotel has to register your plate first — depends on which side of a line on the map it sits.
This checker finds the address, then tests that exact point against every zone outline on the site: the same outlines the map draws. If it is inside, you see which zone, its kind and timetable, and whether it is active right now. If it is outside, you see how far the nearest boundary is, because a hotel 80 metres from a zone is a different problem from one 2 kilometres away.
What to do with the answer
- Inside a ZTL: email the hotel before you travel and ask whether it registers guests’ plates, for which days, and where you should park. Our guide to hotels inside a ZTL has a template.
- Inside a pedestrian area: there is no timetable to wait out. Plan to park outside and walk, or ask the hotel about a porter or luggage service.
- Just outside: check the map for the gates between you and the motorway, and ask the hotel which approach avoids them.
- Far from any zone: you are clear of the zones we map. Smaller towns may still have a ZTL we have not mapped — the signs decide.
Questions
My hotel is inside a ZTL. Can I drive to it?
Usually yes, but only with your plate registered. Hotels inside most zones can send your number plate to the Comune so the camera lets you through for check-in and check-out. Ask the hotel before you arrive, and give it the plate as soon as you have the car.
The checker says my hotel is just outside. Am I safe?
The hotel may be, but the road to it may not. Zones often run up to the street a hotel stands on, and the obvious route from the motorway can cross a gate. Look at the map, approach from the side away from the zone, and ask the hotel which way to come in.
How accurate are the zone outlines?
Good to a street or so. A few cities use official open-data boundaries; the rest are traced from official overlay maps. Within about 50 metres of an edge, treat the answer as uncertain and ask the hotel.
The town is not on your map. Does that mean there is no ZTL?
No. We map more than 350 zones, but the government’s list of camera-enforced ZTLs includes towns we have not yet added. If we have nothing near your address, look for the red-circle sign at the edge of the old town and ask the hotel.
